My fiancé and I came here for a rare morning coffee date, a perfect pause in our busy lives as parents. Parking was easy and free just around the corner. We grabbed a sunny table outside, soaking in the morning light and each other’s company, while sipping lattes topped with delightful foam art. Warm, bright, and full of life, the Mother Tongue was inviting and cheerful, with wonderfully friendly staff. It was a lovely, and simple, a great and sweet experience.

Really disappointing experience. The staff was noticeably rude and unfriendly to me, especially compared to the white man ahead of me. Pretty terrible considering the business claims to be inclusive and supportive. The chai latte was also bad. It mostly tasted like milk with barely any chai flavor and the cup wasn’t even filled all the way to the top.

Quintessential Oakland progressive cafe. Everything you’d expect including good coffee, people working on changing the world, and taking work calls on their laptops.

i enjoyed my flat white with cafe de olla syrup! the pink lighting inside the cafe is a bit off-putting but i enjoyed the outdoor seating.

Would love to leave a better review because the chai latte was perfect, but service was dismissive at best and I paid $13 for a deviled egg croissant that was so salty as to be practically inedible. I ate it because I paid for it and took it to go, but my lips were burning afterwards.
